Love Rymes With Hideous Car Wreck by the Blood Brothers

(Please don't watch the video - just listen to it. It's so annoying to watch. Even I, who love the song, am pissed the fuck off by this video. Also, the sound lags so the visuals are off and it just gives you a headache. Yeah - just listen. Please.)
Those tire tracks
Zigzag your torso like the Devil's self portrait
The car accident, the skin graft treatment,
The flower basketsThe wincing relatives...
You bid her farewell then got in your car
And that's the last thing that you can recall
And when they pulled you out
You didn't know your name
Exploding semi truck, I blurred your face with flame...
You met Jane four years ago today
Dancing at some vomit-stained frat party
Her newspaper gown, a flashing headline brown,
her violent gypsy danc, her tired underpants...
Love, love, love, love, love, love
Love, love, love, love, love, love
Rhymes with pity now
Love, love, love, love, love, love
Love, love, love, love, love, love
Rhymes with sympathy now
Jane let you touch and feel her
She was so free like a pineapple in a tree, but
You said it's dangerous
To be so intimate
You know it's dangerous, dangerous, dangerous
And Jane said when she laid on her back
The sun hit her body like an ugly landscape
But some things never get better
Like used cars and bad livers
So you traded her in for a better looking brand
One with fake porno tits
A pad lock on her lips
A disposable tan
Biodegradable hands
Back at the hospital
You got no visitors at all
She visits you in your sleep
That newspaper gown (you want it)
Is always on fire (you want it)
Back at the hospital
You got no visitors at all
She visits you in your sleep
But that newspaper gown (you want it)
Is always on fire (you want it)
She met him a week after you left her
When you tossed out her untouched to the garbage collector
He talked her out of her skirt in his beer-soaked apartment
And then they did all the things
You never said that you wanted
And the sirens are laughing underneath your skull
And your thoughts are turning dull, callous and cold
Last night you gave your burden a name
Last night you gave your burden a face
But your burden looks an awful lot like her
Love, love, love, love, love, love
Love, love, love, love, love, love
Rhymes with pity now
Love, love, love, love, love, love
Love, love, love, love, love, love
Rhymes with sympathy now
Love, love, love, love, love, love
Love, love, love, love, love, love
This song…wow. It’s bizarre. I decided to put it as my first post on this blog just because it’s very strange and the whole band is one that normally goes against all my tastes in music. But my friend loved this song so much that she made me listen to it – and the whole album – three times while she was at my house one day. I kind of worshipped her back then, so anything she liked, I tried to like to – this included. Needless to say, it kind of grew on me, both the song and the band. I’m not quite sure how it happened exactly.
So let’s see…I like this song because it’s not your typical love song. It’s ugly. Everything about it is ugly – the story, the singing, the images the lyrics give – but it just hits something right. There’s a lot of anger and regret and disgust. And the chorus. Oh, how I love the chorus! Everything about it is perfect and it’s what saved the song for me. I wouldn’t have been able to stand listening to it otherwise. A lot of people hate Blood Brothers lyrics and call them juvenile – which is kind of true. It’s emo poetry half the time. But despite that I still enjoy listening to it. There’s something raw about it; they don’t shy away from the feeling they want to portray, even if it is somewhat adolescent. The music in itself is pretty good once you get past the singing. They’ve got some really good tunes and guitar work that play with the vocals throughout. I’ve only been able to start listening to the instruments in Blood Brothers songs recently just because I’ve always been overpowered by the voices. But now that I have, I’m pleasantly surprised.
I kind of suck at reviewing, especially music, so this is how I’m going to end my first post. Hopefully more shall follow!!
And give the song a chance, even if you don’t like it at first. It’s the kind of thing that must be listened to more than once.
